Yesterday, I posted a news story entitled "The Therapeutic & Health Benefits of Pets." The blog with the news story detailed that pet owners are less likely to be depressed than non-pet owners, have lower blood pressure, and are less likely to have heart disease. Here is that blog -- http://newyork.storeboard.com/blogs/pets-animals/the-therapeutic-and-health-benefits-of-pets-part-i/326691.
The news story had so much information that I am posting it twice. The second half of the news story has several parts, including how pets can help you make healthy lifestyle changes, how pets improve the health of seniors, and how pets improve the health of children. Below are some highlights:
A. HOW PETS HELP YOUR LIFESTYLE: * They help you meet new people, particularly on dogwalks. * They help you get out of bed when you're depressed (as my dog Susie did for me many times). * "Nothing beat loneliness like coming home to a wagging tail or purring cat."
B. HOW PETS IMPROVE SENIORS' HEALTH: * Seniors often lose part of their sense of self-worth, but taking care of pets can help them regain it. * Seniors often have trouble maintaining their social network, but dogs in particular can help them gain friends. * "Pets encourage playfulness, laughter, and exercise, which can help boost your immune system and increase your energy."
C. HOW PETS IMPROVE CHILDREN'S HEALTH: * Pets can help children become more compassionate, empathetic, and responsible people. * Pets can help children learn by stimulating their imagination and curiosity. * "Caring for a furry friend can also offer another benefit to a child: immense joy."
