3 Tools to Help You Find Bed Bugs
Bed bugs can cause a lot of stress, anxiety, and trauma for people dealing with them. This is mainly due to the fact that they are hard to find and when we are at our most vulnerable (sleeping), is when they come out to drink our blood.
The three main tools that I use in my business to help me find bed bugs are:
K9 Inspections Bed bugs are notorious for hiding in small cracks and crevices. This is why oftentimes dogs are used to sniff out bed bugs. If they were super easy to find then we wouldn’t need a k9 to help us! The dog can sniff all around and is trained to alert the handler once they smell bed bugs. Using a dog can also be beneficial if you have a big house or apartment with multiple rooms. The dog can let you know which rooms are affected by the bed bugs. In a city like, NYC, these bed bug sniffing dogs are working around the clock to make sure businesses and public spaces do not have bed bugs. A bed bug inspection is more thorough when a bed bug sniffing dog is used.
Bed Bug Blue Bed bugs leave behind evidence. You might find an actual bed bug, fecal matter, or shed skins. When I am out on bed bug inspections, I will often find fecal matter which I test with a kit called Bed Bug Blue. This kit includes Q tips, a solution, and developing paper. It is easy to use and will give you an answer immediately. Wet the Q tip with the Bed Bug Blue Solution, then wipe the suspected fecal matter mark, then smear that onto the developing paper. Within seconds if you see the paper turn blue then you have a positive for bed bug fecal matter.
I use this kit everyday when I am doing inspections. Fecal matter is one of the first signs that I find after doing a K9 inspection followed by a thorough visual inspection. This lets me know 100% whether the black dots that I found are from bed bugs.
Climb Up Monitors Place these climb up monitors under your bed legs as well as under the bed and anywhere in the room you suspect has the bed bugs. The traps are designed to go under the posts of a bed, couch, or chair. They are pitfall type of traps, so once a bed bug climbs up the side and falls into the pit, it won’t be able to climb out. Don’t just put them under posts, research has proven that they also catch bed bugs by just being out on your floor. The more you place down the better your chances are of catching a bed bug. They can also be placed on the floor of your closet. Scientific studies have proven that the bed bugs are attracted to dark colors. You have a better chance of trapping some within the Climb Up Monitor trap by using the black traps.
These three tools: a trained bed bug sniffing dog, Bed Bug Blue, and Climb Up monitors can help you determine if you have bed bugs. Slowly checking every seam on your mattress and then bed frame with a very bright flashlight, is also the first step for a thorough inspection. Just remember that bed bugs leave behind evidence. With a slow and methodical inspection you will be more likely to find this evidence.
