This is the third of a three-part series on helping businesses improve their marketing campaigns and SEO efforts. The first part was entitled “Five Tips On Using E-Mail In A Marketing Campaign.” The second part was entitled “Five Writing Tips That Can Improve Your SEO Rankings.”
“Websites that rank on the first page of Google -- especially in the first three spots -- garner over 75 percent of all user traffic.” “3 Easy Ways to Improve your Website Traffic and Ranking with SEO”
The North Seattle Community College article reports that most people who are searching for something, including a product or service they are interested in, via a search engine such as Google, “never” view the second page of search results.
In fact, search engine optimization (SEO) ranking is so important that 18 percent of searchers will visit the website that is ranked first, 10 percent will visit the second-ranked website, and 7 percent will visit the third-ranked website, according to the article.
These statistics are so overwhelming that striving for a higher SEO ranking can be imperative to the success of a business, but improving your startup company’s SEO ranking can be easier said than done partly because SEO algorithms are proprietary and the publicly available information on them is very limited and outdated and partly because the algorithms factor in more than 200 variables.
Figuring out how to maximize the chances that your company’s website will rank high on a search engine result is difficult, but the tips include:
1. Become An Expert: You can position yourself as an expert on the products and/or services that your startup company offers. The North Seattle Community College report recommends incorporating your blog into your company’s website and updating the content of the blog regularly because search engines “want to offer users the most current, fresh information available.”
2. Increase Your Backlinks: A blog with useful information can spur other websites, including media outlets, to put the useful information on their websites. Oftentimes, those websites will give their readers a chance to read the whole blog by underlining the information. The readers click the underlined information and they are taken to your website. This link is called a hyperlink on the other company’s website and a backlink on your website. “You should try to get as many links pointing at your pages as possible,” according to a report by The University of Chicago.
3. Improve Your Website’s Design: Companies that rank SEO agencies — and help businesses improve their SEO ranking — report that website quality is a major factor in how well SEO agencies perform.
4. Use Long-Tail Keywords: You increase your chances of ranking high on an Internet search when you use multiword keywords. For example, if you’re a multilevel marketing company, using a term like “multilevel marketing” is more apt to get the prospective clients you’re interested in than using “marketing” as a keyword.
5. Be Careful About Keyword Density: Search engines often penalize websites that repeatedly use the same keyword in their text, according to “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips,” a report by Western Kentucky University. A keyword density of about 2 percent is appropriate. In other words, a keyword should appear about twice in a 100-word article or about four times in a 200-word article.
