Should You Drive a Motorhome or Pull Your Camper Down South for the Winter |
Posted: November 20, 2020 |
The end of 2020 will be here before you know it, which means winter is on its way back! From Michigan to New York and beyond, retirees all across the country are ready to leave their primary homes before the first snow begins. If this describes your intentions, you already know it is time to head to your seasonal home in Florida. It is finally here! Because you're so excited, you probably want to go right away. It is more beneficial to plan out your trip first. This doesn't just mean what you'll do for a few months in Orange County; it also means the drive down itself. Are you ready to hit the open road, and bring your place to stay along with you? This way, you'll be comfortable along the drive, and have a great place to watch television, play games, sleep, relax and eat during the drive. You can take a break whenever you want to rest, or watch your favorite television show before you drive again. You'll save so much money, because you won't need a hotel room or restaurant meal for your entire drive.
The question is- which one? It's time to decide between a fifth wheel trailer and a Class A motorhome. A motorhome is a vehicle that you can drive and also stay inside. Think of it like an apartment on wheels. A fifth wheel trailer is a bit different, because you drive your truck, but then go in the addition you're towing for sleeping, eating, and other leisure activities. A fifth wheel travel trailer is a large trailer that requires an air ride receiver hitch. In order to install a 5th wheel hitch or one of the adjustable receiver hitches, you must first have a vehicle that’s capable of towing the weight of the fifth wheel trailer and accepting the hitch. Because these fifth wheels are heavy, they require a full-size truck to tow them.
Fifth wheels are very popular RVs, for many reasons. Given their super-duty hitches, they can be a lot heavier, which means they have a lot more available room and weight rating for appliances, amenities, and sleeping space. That's good news for anyone wanting to avoid restaurants and hotels. You'll have everything you need for the drive, even if it takes several days to reach your second home.
The drive there can be pretty precarious if you're taking a large motorcoach, because they're so large. You either don't have a car down in Florida or you have to tow one, making your ride even scarier. With a fifth wheel, you don’t have to worry about towing a vehicle behind a motorhome, which can be really hard. You’ll automatically have a smaller vehicle you can unattach from the trailer and take into town. One of the best reasons to choose a fifth wheel trailer is the price. These are much less expensive than a motorhome, which can feel more like a luxury penthouse when you look at the price tag attached. If you already have a capable truck, a fifth wheel trailer is much cheaper than buying in a large motorhome.
Go ahead and tour the country this winter heading down to Florida. With your truck and one of the available adjustable receiver hitches, you'll enjoy yourself so much you won't believe you ever paid for hotel rooms in the past!
