The Empire City. The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps. All of these names denote the largest city in the United States and the cultural capital of the world: New York City. New York is an incredible city with an expansive history, cultural atmosphere, and incredible people. You can do anything in this great place; from checking out a local dive bar to attending the Metropolitan Opera, and everything in between! One of the often-overlooked aspects of New York City is its incredible religious diversity. New York is home to millions of people who practice a multitude of religions. From grandiose Jewish synagogues, to beautiful Catholic cathedrals, to ornate Buddhist temples, and amazing Muslim mosques, New York City has it all! When traveling to New York City, it is a great idea to spend some time taking a religious tour of the city’s great religious edifices. You can find out some great places to see listed below:
The Museum at Eldridge Street The Museum at Eldridge Street may not sound like the name of an amazing religious structure, but it is one of the greatest Jewish synagogues in all of New York! While not in regular use anymore, the Museum at Eldridge Street is a Jewish house of worship that was built well over 100 years ago! This grand temple is found in Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood, where Jews flocked in large numbers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a site that should not be missed, as it regularly holds joyous events and even has free admission on Mondays!
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is perhaps one of the most iconic buildings in all of New York, and certainly the most famous religious structure in the city. It is a Catholic cathedral in the midtown neighborhood of Manhattan. Millions of people flock to this grandiose structure to admire its architectural beauty and enjoy its atmosphere. Tourists flock to Saint Pat’s (as it is colloquially known) during the Christmas holiday season, as it is right near Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree. They often have altered seating arrangements set up during this time of year in order to accommodate all of the extra visitors.
Mahayana Temple Buddhist Association The Mahayana Temple Buddhist Association is a Chinese Buddhist temple located in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood. This iconic Buddhist temple is both beautiful and outside the realm of what the normal tourist may see. Unless they have traveled to Asia, many travelers have never been inside of a Buddhist temple. This temple is great for people who have never been, as they are very open to tourists. Seeing the large grand statue of the Buddha as well as experiencing the different culture is a great way to finish off your religious tour of New York.
Final Thoughts New York City is an incredible place to live as well as to visit. There is so much cultural and religious diversity in this metropolis and taking a religious tour to try and see some of the highlights is a great idea when you come to see New York. The Museum at Eldridge Street, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Mahayana Temple Buddhist Association are just three of the thousands of religious locations throughout the city, and if you have time, you should try to see these great locations and many more!
