Making Your Church Appeal to Millennials |
Posted: November 16, 2017 |
Millennials are one of the most important groups of people in the 21st century. They are the transitional generation that remembers the days before society’s obsession with technology (unlike Generation Z) but their lives are still deeply rooted in the craze of the 21st century world. They have grown up seeing vast changes in society and have grown to become a part of them. They are tenacious and driven, but oddly enough, have drawn away from the religions of their parents and ancestors. There are many reasons why millennials have steered away from religion in the 21st century, and as a church leader it is your duty to make your church appeal to this generation of people. Millennials are an extremely savvy generation and in order to have your church appeal to them, there is much that you need to do. A few suggestions are listed below: Utilize Technology As previously stated, millennials’ lives are deeply rooted in technology. From maintaining an active social media presence to binge watching television shows, millennials are constantly using technology. If you want to successfully make your church appeal to millennials, you need to get on their playing field and join the tech revolution! A great way to do this is by creating social media pages for your church and garner a following. Not only will this give your church a digital presence, it will also have millennials realize that religion is not stuck in the past. There are many tips and tricks for developing your church’s social media presence, a few of which include engaging your audience and the strategic usage of hashtags. Make Your Church Look Like it Belongs in the 21st Century A major factor that turns millennials off from religion is that they feel it does not represent 21st century ideals. While no one is asking you not to follow certain doctrines that your church may have set forth, a great way to bring your church into the modern era is by making it look more modern. While stained glass windows and long wooden pews may have been the norm in the 20th century and earlier, the younger generation generally wants to feel like they are in a more modern atmosphere. You will want your sanctuary design to be a mix of traditional and modern in order to appeal to a younger and more contemporary crowd. Final Thoughts Running a church is no easy task and trying to appeal to everyone can be a great challenge. While you may be inclined to give up on the millennial generations’ church attendance, it is important that you as a spiritual leader continue to appeal to them. You have to make sure that you do not give up on any of your parishioners, no matter how futile your attempts may seem. By utilizing technology and making your church look like it belongs in the 21st century, you will surely appeal more to millennial audiences and will indubitably have a larger church congregation in no time at all!
