Nomad vs. NoMad
We hear the term “nomad” and our mind races to vagabond - a person who wanders from place to place without a home or job. Nomad societies developed in the period from 8,500 - 6,500 BC in the Eastern Mediterranean area. In 1995, there were an estimated 30 - 40 million nomads in the world. While there are no official statistics, estimates reveal there are more than a million Nomads living in the United States. Even today, nomads reside in New York, however, they call themselves American Gypsies. The majority of these gypsies are Romanichel Gypsies – the Romany people are of English origins.
Back in 2012, the NY Daily News posted an article about a New York City family featured on a television reality show called “American Gypsies”. Viewed are the American Gypsy traditions such as Bling is status. Gypsy fashion might conjure images of swarthy women in broomstick skirts, printed peasant tops, and head scarves, but the American Gypsy aesthetic is far from earthy and mystical. Instead of looking into crystal balls, Gypsies wear them — on every inch of their bodies if possible. Rhinestones, glitter, crystals….whatever sparkles. Romanichel women customarily marry young, rarely finish high school and stay home to keep their homes spotless, while the men travel to earn money. Usually, they live in trailers but even a nomad needs an apartment for rent some day.
That brings us to the other NoMad, which has been used since 1999. NoMad = "NOrth of MADison Square Park" which is a neighborhood centered on the Madison Square North Historic District in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. In 2001, there was a massive restoration of Madison Square Park which spurred a transformation of the neighborhoods around the park such as NoMad, from primarily commercial to places attractive for residences, upscale businesses and trendy restaurants and nightspots.
New rental residences in NoMad are busting out all over the neighborhood, like EOS, for instance. EOS NoMad offers 375 apartments in a 47-story luxury tower, located at 100 West 31st Street.
