Ever wonder what's happening around the world? This weekly column for Storeboard.com will give you a global perspective of interesting, entertaining, and newsworthy happenings around the planet Earth!
Here's what's happening Continent by Continent this week -- Monday, Oct. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013:
Africa: You don’t think ‘Ethiopia’ when you think ‘astronomy,’ but the Ethiopian Space Science Society opened a large observatory to the public on Saturday, Oct. 19. The observatory is about 10,500 feet above sea level in the Entoto Mountains, which is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. The observatory includes two telescopes that give visitors a chance to see far-away galaxies and stars, said observatory director Solomon Belay. The observatory is just part one of an ambitious space exploration program. Antarctica: The continent has no permanent residents, but has 1,000 to 5,000 people who live in Antarctica for part of the year doing research. October through February is the best time for research, but last week a trip by scientists from the University of South Florida was jeopardized by the U.S. government shutdown, which resulted in the closure of three research stations. The shutdown ended on Oct. 17, but it was unclear whether the research stations would be ready for the scientists’ trip. The scientists want to study how rising ocean temperatures affect Antarctica’s glaciers. Asia: Koenji is one of Tokyo, Japan’s, “coolest neighborhoods,” according to Time Out Tokyo. Koenji holds its annual autumn festival on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27. Koenji Festival 2013 includes lots of music, lots of food, and lots of activities for children. The streets are “flooded with performers,” including theatre and dance performances. Shopkeepers throughout Koenji will sell books, dolls, and many other gifts at booths on the streets. Australia: The Sydney Opera House is regarded as one of the finest performing arts centers in the world -- and it hosts all kinds of musical performances despite its name. About 1.2 million people per year attend approximately 1,500 performances. On Oct. 27, the opera house celebrates its 40th anniversary with a “massive concert,” according to Time Out Sydney. The encore performance, which will begin at twilight, will culminate with a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony – the performance that was the first performance when the opera house opened in 1973. Europe: Trafalgar Square is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions. Nelson’s Column, which includes four lion statues, is the highlight of the square, which also includes many pieces of contemporary art and is regularly the site of political and community gatherings. On Oct. 27, Trafalgar Square will host “Diwali on the Square,” a celebration for Hindus and Sikhs throughout the world. The celebration will include magical light displays, devotional songs, dancing, and a food festival. Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of the recently deceased Ravi Shankar, will play the sitar at the event. North America: The World Series, one of the United States’ premiere sports events, begins this week. Two of Major League Baseball’s most successful teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox, will play until one team wins four games. The Red Sox beat the Cardinals in the 2004 World Series and won again in 2007. The Cardinals won in 2006 and 2011. The first two games are in Boston on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24. St. Louis hosts Games 3, 4, and 5 from Oct. 26 through Oct. 28. Boston hosts Games 6 and 7 on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. Six of the games begin at 7:30 p.m. Eastern standard time, while Game 4 begins at 8 p.m. Fox will televise each game. South America: The Sao Paulo, Brazil, metropolitan area has nearly 21 million people, which places it second in population in the Americas behind Mexico City and ahead of third-place New York City. Thus, there’s always something to do -- and always lots of food to eat. From Oct. 23 through Oct. 26, there will be a seafood buffet at the wholesale market CEAGESP. For $59.90, excluding drinks, you can experience the joys of an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. The indoor market sells 60,000 tons of seafood annually.
