And here some fun facts about this musical genre: 1. Not everyone at raves do drugs Although the EDM scene certainly has a reputation as a drug-fueled circus of glitter and furry boots, in reality, this is not always the case. Although drug use can be a common occurrence at shows, it is far from the primary feature of the EDM scene. Lots of people come to shows for the music and the sense of community. It’s absolutely possible to have an equally valuable experience without the use of drugs. 3. Diplo once attended an anger management class Thomas Pentz, better known as Diplo, was once ordered to attend anger-management courses after a brief stay in jail after a bar fight. He described the experience as “grounding”. 4. Tiesto is the single richest DJ in the world With a net worth of an astonishing $65 million, Michiel Verwest (Tiesto) takes the throne as the number one most wealthy DJ on the scene. Tiesto is a Dutch musician, DJ, and record producer of electronic dance music. He is a household name in the electronic music genre. 5. Paris Hilton will be releasing a house album this summer That’s right, the infamously ditsy cultural icon, Paris Hilton, will be releasing a house album this summer. She was recently signed by Young Money and is going forward with plans to release the album within the next few months. Music fans everywhere find this new development humorous for its randomness and anticipate the album out of blatant curiosity. 6. Kaskade speaks Japanese fluently, is Mormon, and spent two years as a missionary in Japan. Ryan Raddon, otherwise known by his stage name Kaskade, is a notorious American DJ and record producer. At the age of 19, he served a two-year full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan. He worked briefly as a Japanese tour guide, before transferring to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Here, he jump-started his musical career. 7. Avicii is named after the lowest level of Buddhist hell When Tim Bergling finally settled on his stage name of Avicii, he had already ruled out 6 prior names. In an interview with Las Vegas Sun he explains, “Well, I was picking a name for my MySpace page and I had maybe 6 other options, but they were all taken”. He then remembered hearing about the term ‘Avicii’, which is the name given to the lowest level of Buddhist hell. It is said to be the realm in which the dead who have committed grave misdeeds may be reborn. 8. When it was first released, ‘Get Lucky’ was the #1 song on iTunes in 14 countries By far the most anticipated and talked about album of this year, Random Access Memories by Daft Punk, gained worldwide attention after its release. Get Lucky is one of the most loved internationally songs in the history of music. The French electronic duo, Daft Punk, first reached significant popularity in the 1990’s house movement in France. Since then, they’ve gained increasing praise and respect as the fathers of electronic music. This is exactly why Random Access Memories was so widely anticipated, and people were not disappointed. 9. Steve Aoki first started playing chess at the age of 4 and was once ranked one of the top 250 players in the world Steve Aoki, the famous American electro-house musician is well known for crowd surfing, throwing cake at fans, spraying champagne bottles, and up-beat energizing music. But who knew he was a chess champion? He started playing this mental strategy game at the young age of 4, and played throughout his childhood. Eventually, Steve was ranked as one of the top 250 players in the world. 10. Deadmau5 once guest starred in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Joel Zimmerman (Deadmau5), guest starred in the second episode of the 11th season of CSI. Method Man also made a guest appearance on this episode. In the episode Deadmau5 is featured DJing at a humongous Miami pool party.
