Western Movies in the Present |
Posted: November 7, 2016 |
In the actuality many old movies have found new life in the screens and with younger generations thanks to late-sequels, reboots and more. It is incredibly common to find ourselves watching more new versions of movies and late-sequels than watching new original movies. This is especially true in the action genre of the movies, but there’s a genre that’s not often talked about but has never actually left, and yes in there we also get some remakes, the western movie genre.
Of course, understanding that the western genre had its highlights back in the 60’s and 70’s it has become a rather small genre, with only a few movies coming out lately. In 2012, Quentin Tarantino presented us with Django Unchained, and even though Django had its own western movie series back in the day, it is now a completely different thing. In this movie we can see a modern adaptation at how a western looks in the modern days, and yet it is not quite the right example since it is highly stylized by its director as is the case with every Tarantino movie, the violence and the sense of humor run wild in this movie.
And even this year we’ve got a new movie, that has been made so many times that calling it New is already too much, The Magnificent Seven. If the name rings any bell it is no coincidence, this movie has basically been around since 1954. This is a better example as we can see how a very remade movie is taken and recreated. But there’s also a reason as to why The Magnificent seven is a great example of adaptation, and it is because the original one wasn’t called The Magnificent Seven, now it was a western film, and it wasn’t even American. It was called Seven Samurai, and it was created in 1954 by the legendary Akira Kurosawa and even though it was located in japan and had a story that went along with the japanese culture it was incredibly taken and recreated in a Spaghetti-western that would basically create the genre when John Sturges took it into an american scenario and re-invented it as a new, and “original” western story.
In the modern time with the current movies that usually have amazing CGI (Computer Generated Images) and other special effects, these kind of western movies have a hard time making it back into the spotlight, when you go back to a classic western such as A Fistfull Of Dollars, you find that the whole movie is based upon the creation of a tense scenario with a thrilling story but with a usually slow pace and few action scenes. This kind of movies don’t manage to get quite the reaction with the younger generations and their thirst for action and special effects. However they certainly have not give up on the genre, and for it to make a comeback would mark quite the difference, clearing the way for many other great but forgotten movie genres that may have been dropped or forgotten along the way in all these years of movies.
