Social networks have not incorporated new risks to those who use the Internet since it was already a Social Network. However, we can highlight two contributions of relevance on the part of these online contexts that can compromise our well-being.
How to protect privacy in social networks? Six Keys to Help Teenagers.
The protection of privacy in general and in social networks in particular should be a relevant topic in the training of minors who, according to studies, from the age of eleven begin to flirt with these environments. To do this, we detail six actions are the lines to encourage, the skills and attitudes that we must be able to stimulate:
-
Know and configure privacy options in detail.
This is a key advice but, in general, misunderstood. Teaching how to configure privacy options is important but I think the key is to help you know how they work and the possible effects of poor configuration as well as the limitations of these options. See this example video.
-
Identify the functions and effects of each action.
It is too frequent to err and misplace some information. Facebook has made changes in this direction for some time, giving a graphic indication of where, in what way, a particular commentary would be propagated. In addition, although the action causes the effect sought, it is often unknown what other implications or consequences it has. It is a terrain where the initiative is run by the social network. The same happens in the discharge process, where it should be noted that the conditions are especially important and affect how and where our data can be used, so a detailed reading is necessary.
-
Protect personal data.
These are essential data and their special relevance must be highlighted in order to provide them with special protection. In this work we are protected by laws although, despite the great road going, they are not always efficient or applicable.
-
Protect your personal data.
This is a key aspect. The data (images, information ...) but in very different forms, usually have origin in oneself. That is the first filter. Use VPN apps to secure yourself and it doesn't matter where you are right now, as there are different VPNs for each country: https://www.vpnunlimitedapp.com/en/french-vpn. It seems obvious but we say too many things about ourselves without reflecting on their opportunity at different times or contexts.
-
Maintain a proactive attitude in the defense of own data.
In the social networks are too abundant the data that some people contribute over the others and is, unfortunately and especially in adolescence, very common that they do it in an unconscious, negligent, compulsive or even reckless way. Against this, a proactive attitude in defense of privacy has to be maintained and this implies three actions: inform others about our judgment in this regard; monitor what is being posted from us; exercise, if necessary, our right to eliminate them.
-
Evaluate the attitudes and privacy conditions of contacts.
Contacts, whom social networks call "friends," are a key factor in relation to privacy. However, it is well known that teenagers can easily add several hundred friends who will have unfamiliar and disparate criteria. Regardless of their attitude, more or less considered, it is important to know the conditions in which they use social networks. These conditions refer to their knowledge and skills and, in relation to them, to their privacy settings. Thus, a contact that could be considered and respected may inadvertently affect our privacy with improper configuration and / or action.
